Our Homeschooling in 2010

I have decided to sit down, collect all my thoughts and work out a proper schedule (that mommy WILL stick to) for our homeschool for the rest of the year. I had everything planned, but life threw us a curveball in the beginning of the year with my dad being sick, etc. This has been a difficult year and I have to admit that at times it was easier to just let her run around and play with whatever she wanted to then doing homeschooling with her at least 3 days a week.

This post is for you to please give me your input or any ideas that you might have and it is also for me to refer back to and stay on track!

I want to establish a good morning routine with her, at this stage we have one, sort of, but it only entails getting bathed, eating breakfast and then we let the day guide us. I want to change that, I want us to have a certain routine that we stick to, even if we do need to go out during the morning. I also want to slowely start with a more set schedule for Little Mouse schooling wise - I am planning to start with the Hands on Homeschooling curriculum just after her second birthday and I want us to be in a solid routine by that time.

Here is what I thought might work for us:

Morning routine

Get ready for the day (includes bathing, getting dressed, brushing teeth and drinking some milk)
Bible Study
Circle time - I will use this time to spend reading with her, or working on something like a sensory box.
Breakfast for Little Mouse (she prefers eating her cereal a bit later in the mornings)
Art (once a week we will be doing art just after Bible Study from about 9h00 - 11h00)
Break (we can use this to free play or if we need to go out - she usually still naps between 12h00 and 14h00)

Afternoon routine

Lunch
Craft (if I have anything planned, I will try and do at least one craft per week)
Work out of her curriculum or any structured activity.

That's what I have in mind - I will start implementing it from next week on. I will update you on our progress in our Tot School post next week Sunday. I want to also make a detailed program for us to follow, will upload that tomorrow. I already started on the Art one and I am excited about all we are going to do!

If you have any ideas or suggestions please feel free to email me or comment!

God bless!

Looks great to me! I like how you have it with no time constrictions, like eat between 8-9, school between 10-11, etc. I much prefer a ROUTINE to a SCHEDULE. That way you don't have to worry if little things pop up (bad or good) that don't fit into your scheduled times.

When I homeschooled, I loved it. I always put the intensive work in the morning line-up, which makes lunch time fun time and use the more relaxing items for the afternoon. We used to go to the YMCA to swim every other day, but that would always be after the intensive work (math, science, learning to read or reading).

I love the unconventional schedule of homeschool. My oldest son, who was homeschooled for 3 years, married a sweet young lady who was homeschooled all the way throughout.

The most important thing? Enjoy! Paint! Read exciting books together! Go on trips!

I wish I could be more helpful but I struggle with this too. I am going to stay home full time in a couple of months so I really need to get a routine in place. Please let me know if the one that you set up working out for you. It sounds great!

That sounds like a pretty good start.
I've been wanting to do more with little man but with the move I think i'll have to take a break.
Maybe if you incorporate some outside activity too. Little man loves going out and feeling the leaves on every bush in our walk way and he sometimes stops and tries to smell the leaves of course i have to walk around with wipes or handsanitzer just incase we get some icky stuff. Your are doing great Trudie keep up the great work Little Mouse is one lucky little girl!

Ohhh... I love how Julie refers to the fact that a routine doesn't have to be an exact schedule!
Do you do songs for circle time? Like ones with motions to go with them. Not a day goes by in our home without singing (and I sound horrible!)

Hi Trudie! Had to smile when I read this, as I have been going through the same thing this week, trying to decide just how organized I wanted to get with homeschooling my two year old at this stage. I also have an eight month old baby boy, so the dynamics in our house may be a little diffrent than at yours, but in the end I decided on the following:Although I am mightily impressed by what some moms out there are doing, I feel my daughter is learning much more at this stage by just going through the unforced rhythms of our days alongside me. We wash dishes together, hang the laundry to dry (she has her own washing line between to chairs), bake, cook, sweep, read stories and play with toys and baby brother. I make a list of good craft activities and games, and when we feel like doing something like that (which is most days) I just pick one from the list. We have a predictable routine going in our house which helps a little person a lot - they know what to expect and it makes them feel safe. I think you are on the right track - see what works for your daughter!
